Melton Young Researchers: Painting The Town Red

Painting the Town Red is a famous phrase worldwide and is closely linked to Melton Mowbray, after the Marquis of Waterford drunkenly painted people and places in the town red in 1837.

Melton Young Researchers, a volunteer group who meet at the museum, have delved into the history of this saying, using archive material at Melton Carnegie Museum, to learn what really happened to the Marquis and his friends. Using newspaper reports from the time, they have written, directed and acted in a dramatised version of the trial of the Marquis.
